Book Review: Milk and Honey- Rupi Kaur 📖☕️

Hi guys,

Today I’m here with a book review, my very first one which I’m pretty excited about. I’m going to be reviewing ‘Milk and Honey’ by Rupi Kaur which is a collection of poetry/prose and I’m pretty sure you most of you have heard about , if not read already. This book is pretty hyped up on social media and I came across many random quotes from this book on instagram and I was instantly intrigued. After seeing many of my favorite Youtubers recommend it, I knew I had to get it!

This book is divided in to four parts: the hurting, the loving, the breaking and the healing.

The hurting contains poetry about sexual assault and family issues that the author went through. I was quite shocked at the content of the poetry in this section as it was very raw and I found it uncomfortable to read as I wasn’t expecting such chilling content but nevertheless, she did a great job at portraying the pain and suffering and I’m pretty sure it was her intention to make the readers uncomfortable in order to have the appropriate effect on the readers.

In contrast to the hurting, the loving is all about feelings of happiness, excitement and romance that couples feel when they are madly and deeply in love. It contains many pleasant and romantic poetry that couples can relate to.

The breaking again took us to the dark side of the authors life as she went on to describe the feelings of despair and sadness that many of us who have gone through break ups can relate to. Although I’ve never been through a terrible breakup, I could still feel the authors pain through the words she used and I actually quite enjoyed this section as it was very heartfelt and real.

Finally, we come to the loving which is the last and personally, my favorite section of the book. This is all about female empowerment and self love. The poetry is this section is very inspiring for women to overcome any pain and injustice they have suffered and to see the positive in any bad situation. It reminds us to love ourselves and become the best version of ourselves.

Overall I would say that although this book is not loved by everyone, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely the type of book I can keep reading over and over. I didn’t even know I enjoyed poetry until I read this book. I love how I can relate to every poem in this book and feel the authors emotions behind those words and not to forget the illustration that were personally done by her. I would definitely recommend this book! I am eagerly waiting for her next book ‘the sun and her flowers’ as this book has totally left me wanting for more!

Have you read this book? What are your thoughts on it? Let me know!

Thank you for reading xx

  1. I read a review on this yesterday that was not so positive, but I find it interesting to read the various opinions. Although I write poetry and I just posted some now, I have never really become involved in other poet’s work.
Her work is very open and I like that the book is split into 4 sections with self love being the ultimate ending. Great review! xx

    1. Yeah I recently read a lot of negative reviews on her book on goodreads and I was surprised because personally I loved her writing style and how open and raw it was but to others it wasn’t good poetry haha! But yeah it’s interesting reading other people’s opinion!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 💗
