How To Get Amazing Blog Photos πŸ“· (With Your Phone)

Photography is such an important aspect of blogging and it is definitely something i have become better at during the course of my blogging journey. Although looking back at my old photos now makes me cringe, i also feel happy and proud at the progress I’ve made. I still have a lot to learn and my photos are no where near as amazing as some other bloggers but they are pretty good (in my opinion, haha).

I wanted to share with you guys the 4 steps i go through while taking photos for my blogs and also share some tips that will help you take your photos to the next level and no, you don’t need any expensive materials for this such as a professional camera as you can get some amazing photos with just your phone so let’s get in to it!

This is obviously the most important thing to consider in photography and natural lighting is the best lighting. Unfortunately, i don’t get a lot of natural lighting in my apartment which is so sad but i make do with what i have. Now, iPhone photos do tend to come out dark, shadow-y and can also have that yellow tint due to artificial light. If you don’t have natural lighting like me, take your photos in a brightly lit room. You can always adjust the brightness and warmth later on, but make sure the object can be clearly seen in the photo and there are no shadows or light reflections. You might have to take the photos from different angles to achieve that. Just remember photography is all about trial and error so keep trying until you get the best clear photo!

Props & Layers

I cannot emphasize the importance of props in blog photography. I had no idea about props when i first started blogging and my photos were just plain and simple. Try adding different objects in your photos like flowers, magazines, ornaments. Honestly, you can use everything and anything you can find around your house or you could go out and buy some cheap props but make sure it complements the objects in your photos. Also, remember to not go overboard with the props as you want to keep the focus of the picture on the objects and not the props because the props are only there to enhance the photos.

One thing that has really helped me transform my photos is layering clothes of  different patterns/colors/materials. I’ll start off with a simple white background and then add some layers on top and pop of colors and then go in with different props. It makes such a big difference and you can experiment by layering different colors.

Take multiple Shots

Let’s be honest, the photos we take for our blogs and Instagram are very rarely the only photo we took. If you want a good flat lay shot, try standing on a stool and taking it from above. As i already mentioned, photography is all about trial and error and that means you will need to take multiple shots till you finally get the one you are completely happy with. Try different lighting, angles, rearrange your props. Take your time and it will be worth it in the end.

In my opinion, this is the most important step in blog photography especially for someone who isn’t using a professional camera and i will tell you guys the simple way with which i edit my photos.

I don’t use any fancy apps, just Instagram as it’s easy to use and does a great job. First and most importantly , you want to brighten the photo and this is where you need to use your own judgment and see how much brightness suits your photo. Then i lower the warmth on my photo because which is what helps remove that yellow tint from artificial light and this makes a huge difference in showing the true colors of my photo. I will then go to sharpness and usually go all the way to 100 with this. I will occasionally go in with some contrast or structure depending on the photo and that’s it! You just need to play around with the edits and see what makes your photo look the best!

I’ve put some before and after edited pictures below to show you guys the difference:

Those are my four steps for getting amazing blog photos and i really hope this post was helpful to you guys in someway especially if you are a beginner. Photography is all about practicing and learning, so don’t give up!

  1. I take my photos with my phone too. I find that using natural light really helps. Either take photos outside or next to a window. Of course sometimes you are forced to take photos indoors in awful lighting. Editing really does help some then.
