As a lover of all things makeup and beauty, i enjoy learning and improving my makeup application skills and but the one thing that i always seemed to struggle with the most was eye shadow, but you know what they say: practice makes perfect (not that i’m perfect in applying eye shadow by any means, hah i wish). I have; however; been practicing and gotten so much better at it and that is why today i wanted to share with you my top 5 tips that are crucial to getting that flawless, blended eye makeup look!
- Prime your eyes
I know many people skip this step and i don’t understand how. This step is especially important if you are doing a dramatic eye look. Priming your eyes has many benefits such as making the eyeshadows look more vibrant, increasing the longevity of your eye makeup and if you have oily lids like me, girl don’t even think about skipping this step because all that hard work is going right down the drain (trust me, i’ve been there).
- Brushes
Good quality eye shadow brushes is crucial and a great investment. Now, there are millions of eye shadow brushes to choose from so and it can become quite overwhelming. For beginners, i would say you need at least three main eye shadow brushes which include a big blending brush (for transitional shades), tapered blending brush ( for the outer V) and a flat shader brush (lids).
- Transitional shades
No matter what eye shadow look you are going for, remember to apply a transitional shade first. A transition shade helps to merge colors together, and gives some depth to your eyeshadow.
- Go from lightest to darkest
This goes hand in hand with the previous tip meaning you don’t want to go straight in with a super dark color as this will make it harder to blend it. Start of with a lighter shade and then keep building it up to darker shades, this creates a gradient and is what will ultimately give your eyes that full blown out blended look. i’m not the best at blending eye shadows and i’ve noticed that the more shades i use, the more blended my eyeshadow looks.
- Application
When it comes to actually applying the eye shadows on your eyes, remember to use small circle and windshield wiper motion. Many people (including me) make the mistake of only using back and forth motion while applying the crease color which is a big no no. Another tip that has helped me tremendously is that the further back you hold the brush on the handle, the lighter the application of eye shadow and the closer you hold it to the metal part, the more darker the application will be so if you are going in with a dark eye shadow, hold the brush further back on the handle and lightly built up the color.
So, those are some tips that have really helped me up my eye shadow game. Honestly, the more you practice the better you will become in applying eye shadows so don’t give up!

I wish I had discovered primer long before I did! I use it religiously now, but for many years I had no idea such a thing existed! My weakest point of my makeup is often eyeshadow – usually I just swipe on one shadow and that’s that! It’s nice to read some tips for easy techniques 🙂

I actually am in need of a good primer since my lids get oily super fast, I sometimes just use concealer as primer and it works fine, but yeah I used to think it was unnecessary haha!
Haha, I can totally relate I used to just put a shimmer shadow all over my lids and leave it at that! 😅
Thank you for reading lovely! 💕

Same here! I still need to practice more! Haha, when I’m in a hurry I will usually just put on same brown shades and it looks fine but sometimes I will spend hours doing a look and it will be so bad! 😅
Real technique brushes are amazing, I definitely want to get more of their eye brushes! 💕

I never realised how much of a difference a good eye primer could make until I started using it this year! I agree with all of your tips especially about the brushes. Having the right kit is so important.
I’d also recommend keeping your brushes clean/cleaning them after every use.

I don’t understand how people skip primer either! I forgot to apply it once so had to take off all the eyeshadow I had on and start over 🙈 I had no idea that holding the brush further down helped apply it lighter, will definitely try that next time 😊

These tips are really useful as I am very crap at applying eyeshadows. I always wondered why my eyeshadow never seemed vibrant clearly I was skipping very important step. Will be buying a primer next time I go into the shop. Do you have any recommendation for nice primer? Please let me know!!

You should try priming your eyes with a concealer and then setting it with a powder, for some people that works just as good as any other primer. If you have oily lids, look in to the nars primer I’ve heard some great things about it! I’m not sure about any good drugstore eye primers, I really hope that helped! 💕💕

Awesome tips which have been really useful! I’m trying to get more into eyeshadows lately & I use the wiper motions of going back & front At the moment. I’ll try to do more circle motions from now on haha! Also does using concealer on the lid count as priming them? xx

Definitely try doing circle motions I feel like it gives a more blended look, and yes you can totally get away with priming your lids with concealer and then set it with powder, a lot of people do that and that’s what I do sometimes aswell but my eyelids get super oily still so I need some good eye primer 😭 💕
